After Victoria, Nanaimo is the second biggest city on Vancouver Island. It is also the sixth largest in British Columbia. It is known as both “The Harbour City” and “The Hub City”, benefitting from a central location on the island. Although the area was long inhabited by the Snuneymuxw people, European settlers came to the area in the 1700s and Nanaimo was incorporated in 1874.
There is lots for Nanaimo residents to enjoy, ranging from outdoor pursuits to a vibrant arts scene. Locals can sail, hike, kayak and more, as well as attend exhibitions at the Nanaimo Art Gallery or catch a performance at the Port Theatre.
Nanaimo’s four main neighbourhoods are The Islands, Southern Nanaimo, Central Nanaimo and Northern Nanaimo. The Islands contain small, tight-knit communities accessible only by water. Southern Nanaimo is home to many parks as well as shopping and dining establishments while remaining more rural than downtown. Central Nanaimo is the vibrant heart of the city, containing shops, restaurants and most amenities. Finally, Northern Nanaimo runs along the coast and is the location of Nanaimo’s ferry. It is also very scenic.
